The Seed Bank
About twenty years ago, chemical farming came to Martalli. With it, came engineered seeds (e.g., Monsanto). Although these seeds promise greater yields, most of them do not regenerate. This means that, rather than harvesting seeds at the end of each season, farmers have to buy new seeds each year. This adds a big expense to farming and many farmers here have gone into debt buying seeds. This photo shows Anisha’s seed bank where they collect, store and distribute native seeds, which do regenerate.
